A sociable section day out at Carsington
September’s destination for the fly-fishing section was Carsington Water, a 740 acre reservoir tucked away in the Derbyshire Dales. It's a place that has become very popular with members over the last few years thanks to the quality of its hard-fighting rainbow trout and its picturesque setting.
We were fortunate with the weather for our visit and we set out from the boat jetty in conditions that suggested a good days fishing was guaranteed; however, things aren't always as easy as they look and mixed fortunes were reported during the morning session. Whilst some anglers discovered pods of feeding fish and maximised their opportunities, others laboured without success on different parts of the water.
So, lunchtime provided a chance for everyone to get together and swap notes, some friendly banter and some gentle ribbing about who had caught … and who hadn't! Never mind though, it was only half-time and the afternoon to come; things can change very quickly in trout fishing… and they did! Having picked up a few tips and noted where fish had been caught in the morning, some of the guys changed location and methods and caught well during the second half of the session, whilst some of those who had done well earlier found that sport slowed down for them. Such is the unpredictable nature of fly-fishing!
Whatever the results though, a good session was enjoyed by all and at the end of the day, being the social bunch we are, many of the group reassembled at a nearby pub to regale each other of their respective exploits and share a few stories. It's always a pleasure getting together with each other for a drink and a chat after fishing and its friendly and welcoming nature is one of the great strengths of the section. It's one of the reasons why it continues to attract new members from different backgrounds and with different levels of experience.
Our next trip in early October, the pair’s competition at Eyebrook reservoir, Leicestershire, will again show how popular the section has become with more than a dozen members staying overnight to compete against a number of anglers from other forces.
For now though, the trip to Carsington was another great social day out with the West Midlands Fly-Fishing Section.
