Aviron Run 2017
The West Midlands Police Sports & Wellbeing Association hosted the 10k Fun Run and Aviron Championships on Wednesday 20th September 2017. After the event was postponed in 2016, the Athletics section were hoping to attract both existing runners but also some new faces to the fun run.
The event started at 5.30pm and after two laps of Tally Ho, competitors then continued along the Pershore Road and into Cannon Hill for two laps of the park. Competitors then returned for one final lap of Tally Ho and finished in front of the pavilion.
Although it was a fun run, prizes were awarded for the top three finishers in each category and the famous Graham Heeley Trophy was also up for grabs for the winning team. After a strong start and dominating throughout the race, Nick Dale (Local Offender Management Unit) came home the winner in a time of 38 minutes and 3 seconds. Trevor Night (Solihull NPU) finished second with a time of 38 minutes and 55 seconds, with Andy Poole finishing third with a time of 39 minutes. The course was the same distance for male and female entries, therefore finishing first female and 9th overall, Lucinda Wilson (Investigation) stormed home with a time of 44 minutes and 28 seconds. Helen Henry (Child Protection) finished second female and 17th overall with a time of 48 minutes and 45 seconds with Leslie Pymm (Civil Service) finishing third female and 22nd overall with a time of 60 minutes and 34 seconds.
Nick Dale technically won the VET 40 award but as he had won a medal, the award was given to Nicholas Parker (FSI) who finished in 6th overall with a time of 40 minutes and 36 seconds.
The Graham Heeley Trophy was awarded to LOMU (Local Offender Management Unit) from Birmingham East NPU, Nick Dale, Matthew Clarke (39.02), Keith Higgins (46.33) and Andy Bridgewater (49.51).
It was great to see a number of people turnout and an enjoyable time was had by all. The event will once again be a regular fixture on the calendar and hopefully even more competitors will enter for 2018.
Thank you to all of the committee members who volunteered for time keeping, marshalling and thank you to all of the competitors who entered for Charity.
