British Long Course Masters, Plymouth June 2018 Golden Girls Smash British Record

19/06/2018
This year’s British Long Course Championships took place down in Plymouth, a lovely part of the country but did impact on the number of PSUK swimmers able to take part.  Although they only fielded a small team of 7 this was not reflected in the results.

Newcomer to the team, John Molyneaux (Hampshire) had an excellent debut outing in the 30-34 age group; winning gold in the 50, 100 & 200 backstroke as well as the 400 individual medley.  Team Manager, Claire Thorn (West Midlands) swam consistently well in the 45-49 age group; winning gold in the 200, 800 & silver in the 400 freestyle. She also picked up silver in the 200 & bronze in the 100 breastroke.

Aimee Ramm (Leicestershire) despite recently getting over illness still managed to win the 50 fly & 100 freestyle as well as bagging bronze in both the 50 breastroke & freestyle in the 35-39 years age group.  Sally Blick (Sussex) also having her debut outing for PSUK competing in the same age group as Ramm won silver in the 50 fly & bronze in the 100 freestyle.  Sarah White (Surrey) put in some solid performances in the 40-44 years age group with a silver in the 400 & bronze in the 200 individual medleys.

Nick Polkinghorne (Devon & Cornwall) dropped by on his way to the Police Lifesaving Championships in Exeter to win gold in the 100 breastroke 45-49 year age group.  Tom Allen (Kent), competing in the very competitive 25-29 years age group was 5th in the 50 & 400 freestyle.

On top of these great individual performances the team raced 6 relay events all in the 160-199 age group picking up gold in 5 & silver in the other:

The first being the mixed 4 x 100 medley relay with Molyneaux on back, Polkinghorne breast, Ramm fly and Thorn free.  They were going for the British record;  good news is that they smashed this by a massive 8 seconds, however, Molyneaux’s home club, Fareham Nomads not only broke the British & European record they set a new World Record!  It was then believed we had still broke the British record as Fareham had a French & Dutch swimmer on their team but this was overruled!  The same quartet raced over the 4 x 50 distance later in the day taking victory and beating Fareham by 2 seconds.
Blick, White, Thorn & Ramm competed in 4 relay events the highlight being the 4 x 100 freestyle where they broke the British record (pictured); the ladies went onto put in 3 further sterling performances winning the 4 x50 freestyle as well as both the 4 x 50 and 4 x 100 medley relay’s.

A long, tiring 3 days of racing but the fantastic results were worth it.  The team look forward to the British Short Course Masters in Sheffield later in the year.  As a result of last minute sickness of the ‘dog sitter’, Jeanie came along and is now the team mascot.
