Draycote double for winning West Mids anglers
Two competitions on consecutive weeks at Draycote reservoir and two very different fishing days, but whilst the weather was contrasting, the results weren’t, with anglers from the West Midlands Fly-Fishing section enjoying success on both occasions.
Our Inter-Force Friendly event in late April saw the return of cold, wet, miserable conditions after the sunny weather experienced a couple of weeks earlier and we had to admit it wasn’t the most pleasant of days to be out in the boat. Nevertheless, there was still some good nymph and buzzer fishing to be found in the deeper water and the title was taken by our own section organiser Steve Owen with a fine performance, catching his limit of 10 fish in quick time. It was a well-deserved victory as Steve is the founder of this competition which he introduced a few years back to replace the previous PSUK qualifiers for the Home Nations Internationals Boat Fishing Championships, a process now decided by a separate competition.
Seven days later and back at Draycote again for the ‘Help for Heroes’ charity event, organised by local Warwickshire anglers. West Mids were represented by six members in this 12-boat ‘pairs’ event and this time the weather was perfect for fishing and some participants really took advantage of the conditions. In pleasant sunny conditions, with occasional cloud cover and a light breeze, West Mids’ rods Chris Howkins and Rodger Symons absolutely took the reservoir by storm with an incredible 55 trout (yes, just check you read that right) fishing a variety of nymphs and lures on intermediate sinking lines. Runners-up places came in some distance behind but a creditable performance was put in by West Mids’ Garrick Stafford and Kevin Pearson to gain fourth place with 20 fish to the boat.
So, three days of excellent fishing were enjoyed by all, with members enjoying competition success and making new friends along the way. That’s how we do fly-fishing in the West Mids, a friendly and accessible section which is open to all.
On that note, don’t forget that our ‘Novices Day’ is coming up soon. It is on Saturday 26th May at Fisherwick Lakes near Lichfield and we are looking for new members, so if you are new to fly-fishing or even if you haven’t fished before, please come along and give it a go. There will be experienced anglers there to give you some basic instruction and guidance for free. You might even show them up by catching more than them!
For more details please contact our Secretary Steve Owen, based at the Transport Department, Park Lane, Birmingham via his mobile number 07974 417855
We look forward to meeting you soon.
