Fly Fishing Charity Day 2018

Another great day at Blithfield!
June this year saw the 11th year of the Cancer Charity Day held at Blithfield reservoir in Staffordshire host over 50 anglers for another great day out on the water and one which again brought fine weather for the event.
The annual event, organised by West Mid’s Steve Owen, has grown steadily from its inception back in 2008 and is a now a firm favourite on the fly-fishing calendar attracting anglers from all over the country to take part. This is a testament to the incredibly hard work that Steve has put in over the years, resulting in cancer charities benefiting by nearly £33,000 from the event during this time.
The day started in time-honoured fashion with our trusty volunteers getting the kitchen going with bacon baps and tea and coffee by 8 am for the early arrivals. Of course, our Charity Day stalwarts Rodger and Chris were around to pounce on anglers munching into their breakfast sandwiches to sell the raffle tickets and making sure that everyone went in the sweep! No wonder it has been such a success, every opportunity to raise money was taken and everyone gave generously for such a good cause.
The fishing event itself was again excellent, with anglers pairing up in boats and returning many good catches in sunny conditions.  Prizes were awarded for the winners and runners-up, but the main focus for everyone was in raising cash for Breast Cancer and Cancer Research, so the competition became secondary to the main purpose of the day itself, even though the fishing is always keenly contested!
It all concluded at the presentations with the main auction where many donated prizes, gifts and fishing tickets were sold to raise even more money, bringing the total for this year’s event to over £2,000. Our sponsor, Richard from SKB tackle was there with a display and as always contributed substantially towards the day and even the fish that were caught and weighed in were taken to a local butcher to be sold locally, raising even more money.
So, another successful and well-supported Charity Day, all thanks to the work that goes into it every year by Steve, who certainly earned his pie and a pint at the pub when the day was over.  Naturally, as this is such a social event, he was joined there by many of the participants who gathered to reflect on what had been a great day out for a most worthy cause.
