More fundraising success at Blithfield!

Charity Day 2017
More fundraising success at Blithfield!
June this year saw the 10th year of the Cancer Charity Day held at Blithfield reservoir in Staffordshire host up to 60 anglers for a fantastic day out on the water, a day blessed by fine weather and generous donations to make it another great success.
The annual event, organised by West Mid’s Steve Owen, has grown steadily from its inception back in 2008 and is a now a firm favourite on the fly-fishing calendar attracting anglers from all over the country to take part. This is testament to the incredible hard work that Steve has put in over the years, resulting in cancer charities benefiting by around £30,000 from the event during this time.
The day started early (but not as early as Steve, who was reputedly there at about 4 am preparing for the day!) with our trusty volunteers getting the kitchen going with bacon baps and tea and coffee by 8 am for the early arrivals. Not to be outdone, Roger and Mick were on hand to pounce on anglers munching into their breakfast sandwiches to sell them raffle tickets and Chris was carrying out his enforcer role to make sure that everyone went in the sweep! No wonder it has been such a success, every opportunity to raise money was taken and no one complained … all for a good cause!
The fishing event itself was excellent, with anglers pairing up and returning many good catches in pleasant sunny conditions.  Prizes were awarded for the winners and runners-up, but the main focus for everyone was in raising cash for Breast Cancer and Cancer Research, so the competition became secondary to the main purpose of the day itself… although everyone wants to do well in competitions whatever they say!
It all concluded at the presentations with the main auction where many donated prizes, gifts and fishing tickets were sold to raise even more money, bringing the total for this year’s event to over £2,500. Even the fish that were caught and weighed in were taken to a local butcher, who sold them locally and returned every penny raised to go back into the charity funds.
So, a long day for many, but well worth it and Steve certainly earned his pint at the pub later, where a number of regulars took the time to reflect on what had been a superb effort and another great Charity Day for a most worthwhile cause.
