More success for West Mids Fly-Fishing!

Following on from the success of the regional Inter-Force friendly competition in April where West Mids’ rods Rodger Symons and Kevin Pearson took first and third respectively, Rodger was at it again, leading the West Mids’ ‘B’ team to competition victory at this year’s PSUK Midlands’ boat qualifier at Draycote Water in May; a venue fast becoming a firm favourite for him.
The event at Draycote was attended by 18 anglers from the West Midlands’ region, with West Mids, West Mercia and Staffs Police all entering teams.  Warwickshire, unfortunately were not able to compete this year.
The West Midlands’ ‘B’ team, mis-named really since it contained experienced and skilled anglers such as Graham Homer, Barry Butler and Garrick Stafford, provided strong support for Rodger who led the way with 25 fish on the day!  This once again showed the strength in depth we have in the Fly-Fishing section, which continues to grow and helps anglers to develop their skills and abilities every year.
The weather shone favourably on us for the event, with a good mix of sunshine and cloudy spells, which appeared to be ideal conditions, but after a lot of heavy fishing activity at Draycote in the preceding days, the trout were becoming very wary and it was clear that it required something a bit different to turn an average catch into a winning one.
That indeed was the difference, with top individual rods, Mick Cartlidge and Rodger Symons, taking a different tactical approach to the vast majority, by choosing the opposite end of the reservoir to the crowds and finding fish in great numbers. A good decision that led to them being first and second on the day and qualifying for next year’s boat championships.  Although the West Mids’ ‘B’ team won, they were unable to represent the region next year and made way for second placed West Mercia to take the honour.
The final results were:
  1. West Midlands ‘B’ – 39 fish (74 lbs)
  2. West Mercia – 26 fish (61 lbs)
  3. West Midlands ‘A’ – 21 fish (47 lbs)
  4. Staffordshire – 18 fish (39 lbs)
  1. Mick Cartlidge (Staffs -not competing as part of the team) – 37 fish (77 lbs)
  2. Rodger Symons (West Mids) – 25 fish (50 lbs)
Overall, the event was a great success and as always, after the results were announced and banter exchanged, many of the group adjourned to the pub to round the day off nicely.
As always, another great day out with the West Mids’ Fly-Fishing section!
