Planes entertain as The Pairs wins again
This year’s police pairs boat fly-fishing competition was held at the popular Eyebrook reservoir in the historic county of Rutland, now Leicestershire. Well actually it's been held here every Autumn for the past few years since the move from Draycote Water during its temporary closure back then and we've stayed ever since.
This ever-popular and growing competition again attracted anglers from across the Midlands and beyond, involving around 50 participants from 10 different police forces. Thanks to secretary Steve Owens commitment in running the annual event, the West Midlands Police Fly-Fishing section has now earned a strong reputation for its significant contribution to organised fly-fishing nationally.
The two days of fishing that many of the competitors enjoyed (you have to practice for these things if you are serious about it …) were fortunately spent in glorious autumnal sunshine which made conditions very pleasant indeed, whether you were catching or not. To add to the pleasant conditions, competitors were treated to the sight of some low-flying historic military aircraft, including a Lancaster Bomber, passing overhead. Never a dull moment out on the water and Steve quickly took credit for arranging the fly past as part of the event; I think that one or two of the visitors might have believed it…for a minute!
Overall, the event was another resounding success with the honours this year going to a couple of top England boat anglers Dave Summers (Leics.)and Mark Matheson (Northants), but a lot of boats caught well and everyone involved was more than satisfied with a great couple of days trout fishing at a fantastic location.
The day culminated with trophies being awarded and appreciation shown to the winners and runners-up, followed by a raffle where everyone gets a prize, so no one leaves empty-handed, adding a nice touch to what is already known as a fun and social event.
Once again, friends and colleagues enjoyed a great day out with the West Midlands Fly-Fishing Section.
