PSUK Badminton Nationals 2017 Newcastle

.PSUK Badminton Nationals 2017 Newcastle
WMP joined with Staffordshire and the Warwickshire/West Mercia Alliance to form a Midlands Team representing the region at the PSUK Badminton Nationals held in Newcastle over the weekend 29-30th April 2017.
The Midlands were represented by;
Nathan East - Alliance, Sarah-Louise Lithgow - Alliance, Dave Powell - West Mids, Pat McKee - West Mids, Jamie Checkland – West Mids, Emma Simpkins – Staffs, Mark Lawrence - West Mids, Lorraine Billenness - Alliance, Simon Freeman - Staffs, Deborah Soley - West Mids and Narinder Bains - West Mids
A tough time for the Midlands Team as the Tournament was dominated by Scotland and the North East Region in tightly fought contests. Some new blood in particular Bethan Higginson (Cheshire) taking the lady’s singles title. Gordon Thompson (Scotland) taking the men’s singles title.
Dave and Jamie reached the ¼ finals of the senior men’s but were beaten by the pair who went on to win the category.
Narinder and Emma reached the ¼ finals in the mixed doubles.
The weekend saw some outstanding individual and pair performances and has been a great platform to head to next year’s Nationals being held in Glasgow.
Jamie’s experience showed playing in the Plate Competition reaching the final but was beaten by a much younger opponent in Alex Ollis (Hampshire)..
Surprise award of the weekend was a new category for Outstanding Performance. The cup being donated by the Northumbria Police Federation. The winner of this award was our own Mark Lawrence, well done Mark.
