PSUK - Fly Fishing Update
Our fly-fishing section is popular amongst members for many reasons and we pride ourselves on being accessible and welcoming new members to this fascinating outdoor activity. Some who join us simply want to have a relaxing day out fishing and to get away from it all, some want to learn new skills from experienced anglers on development days and some just like to meet and socialise with new friends, but an important part of the calendar is taking part in national and regional boat fishing competitions with Police Sport UK (PSUK) and the English Police Fly Fishing Association (EPFFA).
The West Midlands Police Fly-Fishing section has had many successes in recent years, both in representing the region at national competitions with respectable results and with its members regularly qualifying to be part of the English Police team in the International Championships.
This year has seen members of the section representing the West Mids at the EPFFA boat fishing qualifiers at Rutland Water, Leicestershire in April and two teams take part in the regional qualifiers at Draycote Water, Warwickshire in May. Our members narrowly missed out on qualification at both competitions, but in the face of stiff competition from top anglers around the country. However, in June the PSUK National Boat Fishing Championships, again held at Draycote Water, proved to be quite a feather in the West the Mids’ cap. As it was held in the Midlands region this year, it was the responsibility of the regional organiser, our own Steve Owen, to arrange the event. This is no mean task, with hotel accommodation, food, boat and fishing bookings, itineraries, printed programmes and corporate sponsors to arrange than the coordination of around 80 anglers over three days! He did it superbly and received plaudits from many representatives for the success of the event. Steve had not organised anything on this scale before, but his skills had been honed over the years through his work on the annual Cancer charity event no doubt. We say well done Steve, you did us proud!
At the event itself, the region was represented by West Mercia, but we had our man Rodger Symons there as an individual and he put in a very respectable performance. The winner of the individuals’ section, however, was Staffordshire’s Mick Cartlidge, but as he is an associate member of the Sports and Wellbeing section, we can claim some success this year after all… well done to you too Mick!
The competition scene may not be what everyone wants from their fishing, but it remains popular amongst several our members who enjoy the ‘cut and thrust’ of competitive sport and that’s what we are about in the Fly-Fishing section, we are there to provide something for everyone.
Why not give it a try? Everyone is welcome, whatever your level of experience. For more information, please contact Secretary Steve Owen at Park Lane depot or on his mobile 07974 417855
