Roys our boy at Rutland!
Four of the WMP fly-fishing section entered the English Police Fly Fishing Association boat championships this April at the internationally renowned Rutland Water in Leicestershire. The event is a qualifier for the England squad who will fish the International Championships in Scotland later in the year, so all to play for!
It was an early season contest and we could possibly say that the team hadn't got into full competition mode yet, but veteran rod Roy Taylor didn't let us down and deservedly got into the top 16 after a solid performance fishing buzzers and imitative patterns to achieve his bag limit.
The conditions seemed good but the fishing was still challenging with most of the fish very tightly shoaled up and quite elusive, so a good deal of pre-competition practice and research was needed to find them.
After a practice day (some anglers had two or more to work this place out!) we had a bit of an idea, but Rutland is such a large expanse of water, we realised that a bit of luck might be needed in the day to give ourselves a fighting chance of success.
Come competition day, the weather remained kind to us but cooler and windier than before; however, no excuses it was now or never. As everyone set off at the whistle, the flotilla of 24 boats parted, some to the North arm of Rutland and some to the South, with a few sitting on the fence by remaining in the main basin for a while! Which area would produce the best fishing? we would soon see.
After a hard-fought contest, the participants adjourned to the sailing club for the results and presentations to finalise what had been a well-run competition. Whilst three of knew we hadn't done quite enough this year to break into the squad, there was an air of anticipation as the results were read out as Roys catch result was a very competitive one. Then as the list of qualifiers unraveled, Roy's name was read out and it was handshakes all round as West Midlands had a representative in the England team for the second year running.
A meal and raffle then followed, with anglers from many forces mixing and socialising together to round off a very enjoyable couple of days at Rutland Water.
