Snooker Season Report
The snooker season finished in fine style for the West Midlands Police team who lifted the coveted Stourbridge and district snooker premier league title for the 2nd year in a row. The team go off to a tremendous start winning every match in the first half of the season but fortunes changed after the winter break with the team losing 4 of the following 5 matches allowing the chasing pack to whittle down the 9 point lead the team had gained during the first half of the season.
However the team kept their nerve, winning all their remaining games to finish the season on 87 points 2 points clear of Hot Shots from Oldbury.
Kevin Franklin had by far the best season of all the players in the team, winning 18 of his 20 league matches, compiling the leagues’ ‘highest break of the season an outstanding 124 clearance. He also won the finals of both the Over 45’s and the singles handicap competitions comfortably, winning both finals by a 3 frames to 0 score line.
Police players, Gavin Sloan, Pete Gibbons Kevin Franklin and Carl Southwick also represented the league in the Worcester Inter-League over 40’s competition helping the team to win the competition for the 8th time in the last 9 years.
National police Championships - Hopton on sea Norfolk.
The West Midland Police were well represented at the games held during the week 2nd to the 5th May 2017.
Neil Marshall lost 3-1 in the semi- finals of the individual competition to Neil Woods from North Yorkshire.
Jodie Allen and Susheel Dhiman represented the West Midlands police in the doubles. They could not emulate last years’ performance losing a stage earlier in the semi-finals.
The masters final was again an all West Midlands affair and was contested between Eric Noble who beat last years’ winner and favourite for the event Steve Garner from the West Midlands and Carl Southwick who had dispatched Jim Butters from Scotland in his semi-final. Eric won the final 3 frames to 0 playing a solid all round game as he had done throughout the competition.
Overall it has been a wonderful and successful season for all those connected with the West Midlands Police snooker section.
