Stan Bean Memorial Trophy

Sunday 24th June 2018 saw the Police Vets Cricket play the annual match against a strong Handsworth team. With the Vets winning the toss and deciding to bat, they quickly got off to a steady pace. On a very hot day, with a game watched by a crowd of about 200 the vets stood firm. Reggae music blaring out from the speakers was supported by the chink of dominoes and the aromatic smells that included the barbeque. This created a fantastic cricketing atmosphere attuned to a match in the Caribbean. This pressured environment was quickly capitalised upon by the Handsworth Team. The opening partnership of Shaz and Adam was quickly disrupted by some intimidating bowling from the Handsworth fast bowlers. Jang and Stan were the next pair who entered this cauldron. A slight resistance was put up by the Vets Team so the Handsworth Team decided to put on the spinners which worked to their advantage. Quickly Stan, Sil, Rohaan and Mick were dismissed by some sharp fielding and some accurate bowling causing John Cartwright to wear his index finger out by pointing it skyward. The score bimbled on slowly, with Dave and Carol adding to the total which slowed up after Jang was out. 193 runs later the Vets team were all out.
Tea was taken and the Handsworth team came out with the aim of slogging the Vets fast bowlers out of the park. Steady bowling by Amar, Carol and David restricted their batsmen for a few overs. After drinks Handsworth batsmen embraced the atmosphere with some cricketing dominance and quickly raced to 150 runs with 10 overs to go. Chasing leather soon became the order of the day with the Vets team succumbing to the brilliance of the Handsworth team.
The Handsworth Community always enjoy having us down to the park and will come out to watch us. This was a game played in the right spirit in Handsworth Park. Monica Bean (Stans Widow) presented the trophy to the Handsworth captain. Food and drinks followed later as the Handsworth team enjoyed their day in the sun.
