Sunshine and showers dominate at Foremark

.Sunshine and showers dominate at Foremark

This month saw the fly-fishing section visit Foremark reservoir, a popular fishery nestled in the South Derbyshire countryside. It was a last minute replacement for our intended visit to Thornton reservoir near Leicester, but due to adverse conditions affecting the quality of fishing there, the fishery manager had kindly offered us a swap to Foremark, which is an old favourite of ours, so everyone agreed and ultimately enjoyed themselves, despite the extremes of weather we faced.

For this Saturday event, eight of the section turned out, including newcomers Cheryl and Lawrie, our latest recruits from the recent Novices’ Day, who, after some instruction from Steve Owen on how to use the engine, went out in a boat to fish for the first time. As we do with all new members, we kept in visual contact with them throughout the day and met at lunchtime to check everything was going ok. They both enjoyed the experience and fished safely on a day when fortunately the winds were gentle, even though the torrential rain wasn't!

This was a relaxed social day for the section and there were no trophies at stake this time, but as always, anglers were keen to find the fish and outscore their colleagues, something that turned out to be quite a challenge at times. However, with a bit of searching and trial and error, some members did find the fish and enjoyed some great ‘top of the water’ sport.

It was great to see our oldest member, 86 year old Joe Belfield back out with us again and he and Dave enjoyed their session fishing from the bank. Others preferred to go out on the boats, but when the heavens opened it was they who could find shelter whilst the rest of us battened down the hatches and took the full force of it in the middle of the reservoir!

Nevertheless, the end of the day finished fine, so anglers came in reasonably well-dried out from the hot sunny spells that had been interspersed by the heavy showers, a lot better than packing away damp gear and going to the pub soaking wet anyway.

All in all, another great day day out with the Fly-Fishing Section.
