Vets Cricket - Mid Season Report

Despite the ongoing hopeless weather, which Britain calls summer, the WMP Veterans Cricket Team have made a decent start to the 2016 season recording 5 wins and 3 losses so far. 3 games have been lost to the torrents of rain. The Ray Russell Memorial Trophy has been retained with an excellent win over Sutton Old Boys, who were captained by Martin Russell, Rays son, whilst Sean his eldest son played for the Vets and ended on the winning side. The day was also a fundraiser for MacMillan and over £550 was raised.

There have been excellent away wins at Ashton under Hill and more recently at Burnham on Sea. Old rivals Woodleigh Vets CC were dispatched at the Tally Ho in fine style with the return game due shortly.

Injuries have once again taken their toll and we are grateful to the players who have stepped in at short notice to help out, including on the odd occasion, one or two guests from clubs we have long been associated with. There have been some excellent individual performances too but they will be praised in the end of season report as we don't want them resting on their laurels at this stage of the season.

We have again been fortunate to have the services of Kay Hay our loyal scorer and John Cartwright, a retired Vets player who is now a Warwickshire League umpire. Tally Ho teas continue to be legendary both for us and for the visitors, a lot of whom probably only come for the tea. Thanks to all the hardworking staff at Tally Ho and the Club itself that supports our section so well. Thanks also to the groundstaff who have had to struggle with awful conditions at times to get out wickets ready for us.

The Vets are always on the lookout for new members for the squad. You don't have to be available every week. Just have a love of cricket and play in the right spirit. Oh and you have to be a fully paid up member of the club to play at Tally Ho and use the kit. The annual fee is a bargain and you get so much benefit from it.
