West Midlands Police Motor Club - June/ July 2018 Newsletter

Back in April this year the club’s AGM was held at Tally Ho, Birmingham, it was a fruitful and constructive meeting, however there were some changes to the committee, Dave Williams has stepped down from Membership Secretary, but will be staying on the committee, Dave has done a Stirling job on raising membership to very healthy levels, so a big ‘thank you’ to Dave for all his hard work. Trevor Whitehead has very kindly picked up the mantle and will be the new Membership Secretary.
Charlotte Tambling, has joined the Committee and has agreed to take on the role of Classic Car/Social Secretary. Charlotte is already involved with classic cars, owning three and is involved with the 2 CV Citroen Club. A classic car section is something the Police Motor Club tried a few years ago, but it never had the full support it deserved, so looking forward to Charlotte’s input I am sure the Motor Club members will also add their support.
Rallying Scene:
The rallying side of things has been a little unpredictable, just like the weather and because of the weather! Events had to be cancelled at very short notice, but organisers have done their best to reschedule where they could.
However, during April and May, the marshalling section was busy covering the 7 Valley Rallynuts Event held in Mid Wales. A full team turned out to cover the end of the Radnor stage which included - flying finish/stop line, radio and passage control. All went well with no issues or incidents. A good day was had by all and feedback received from the competitors they also enjoyed the special stage in Radnor forest.
The next outing was on the Horiba Stages single venue rally held at MIRA test facility, near Nuneaton. Matt and Cheryl Crowe did a great job on the main gate making sure competitors, service crews and marshals went to their prospective areas and that no one entered without authorisation. Once this task was completed Matt & Cheryl joined Jeff Reynolds to assist within stage marshalling, I think they were entertained with some of the competitor's antics.
Dave Williams had agreed to cover the Start Line, to manage the timing clock and traffic light system, this is not for the fainthearted as total concentration is needed, there is only a 30-second window to log in each competitor before they have the green light and go, well done Dave. The start line and arrival was supported by members from Streetly Motor Club, a great job well done.
Paul Farley and Iain Henderson were also out as course/safety car. Overall it was a very good day.
May, saw four club members, John Stockall, Dave Williams, Mark Wakelam and Henry Adams, make the trip to help marshal on the two day (Bet on Aces) Isle of Man, National Rally and also to give support to competing club members Paul Clackett and Scott Dance, Jody Bowcott and David Millard. We as marshals were allocated our marshalling duties, which included two stages on Friday night and four stages on the Saturday, busy time then?
Once our duties were sorted we went to the rally service park at the Grandstand, to meet up with the competitive section of our club.
The two stages we marshalled on Friday night kept us very busy on a chicane, plus heavy rain made things that much more demanding.
Out of the six stages we were given on the rally, three of the stages were cancelled due to various reasons, but we had a really great rally and time on the island.
Some good news for the marshalling section, thanks to the efforts of Trevor Whitehead, the MSA have now approved a ‘call sign’ for the club, so now another string to our bow, hopefully being able to give support as radio crew on rallies, however, no doubt a little more training first though. The marshalling section undergoes the necessary training as laid down by the MSA, (Motor Sports Association) and are all accredited. All new members who come out marshalling are given the necessary support in whatever role we are undertaking.
Competitors Paul and Scott were looking forward to an exciting event in the Subaru Impreza and Jodie and David also keen to do very well in their Proton. The Isle of Man roads are very demanding on car/driver and co-diver.
Paul and Scott were performing well on the opening stages on the Friday evening, even though the weather conditions were less favourable. Unfortunately, their luck did not hold and even though they restarted the rally on Saturday morning, they eventually retired due to an overheated engine. Better luck next on next event. Jody and David had some issued but did finish the event and well placed, so all was not lost.
Corbeau Seats Rally – Essex
Paul Clackett and Scott Dance had competed on the first closed road rally under the new regulations. This event was centred around Clacton, Paul was full of praise for the event saying the organisers had done a great job and the rally was well received by residents along the route, all good for the future of rallying.
Other members of the club who are making a return to rallying after long break from competing include- Paul Farley and Iain Henderson they hope to be out in their freshly prepared Honda. Please keep us updated on your achievements.
Gary Jecketts and Jeff Reynolds in their trusty Subaru planned a return back into rallying. Unfortunately for Garry and Jeff, an event that they had entered was cancelled due to snow and although it was rescheduled was cancelled again due to lack of entries. Third-time lucky guys!
Motor Cycle Section
Nathan Jackson has been out on a 6-hour race at Donnington and achieved 20th overall and top novice trophy. In addition, Nathan has also been out on the 500-kilometre race based on Angsley (No results at present) and then other planned races include-Croft in July, Alton Park in August and Cadwell Park in September. Keep it up Nathan. So from the rallying and motorcycle side, the club is at an all-time high which is excellent news.

To our shock and astonishment, the Motor Club received the Paul Leopold Trophy Award, for work and support did and for raising club profile.
