West Mids Ladies retain National Lifesaving Title
The West Mids Ladies Lifesaving Team attended the National police Lifesaving championships and won the Ladies Title for the third year in a row! This year’s team was made up of the Captain, Liane Andrews, Claire Thorn, Abbi Jones and Naomi Holder.
The championships are held in early June with competing forces hosting the event each year, this year being the turn of Essex. The Championships consist of three team competitions (Ladies, Mens and Mixed) and two individual competitions. Teams consist of between 4 and 6 members who can be police officers, pcso’s, police staff or retired officers, with four participating in each event. The Championships are held over two days and consist of a team dryland first aid incident, individual swim and tow, individual rope throw and then finally the team open water incident. The scores for the individual events are included in the overall team score.
At the end of day one there is a presentation and fundraising evening, with the individual results announced and the standings in the main competition ahead of the final day, and the all-important open water incident. At this crucial point it has never been so close in the Ladies competition, with West Mids in first place only ½ a point ahead of Devon and Cornwall and Essex not too far behind in third. In the Ladies Individual Competition, Liane was placed 4th and Abbi was 6th out of 32.
This year’s water incident was in the Festival Wakeboard Park, Basildon. Liane took command of the incident and a chilly dip in the water ensued for Claire and Naomi, whilst Abbi dealt with the land based casualties and those that were brought to safety. The 3 minute incident was soon over and the waiting began for the results and the final presentation ceremony. After a nervous wait we found we had hung onto first place and our title, with Essex coming second and Devon and Cornwall dropping to third. Devon and Cornwall took the overall Men’s and Mixed titles.
Next year the Metropolitan Police are hosting the competition. Naomi joined us this year and has already said she will be back for more. If you are interested in joining the lifesaving team, please contact any of the team members for more information. We would love to be able to enter all three of the competitions.
