West Mids victorious once again!
After a two year absence from the finals, the West Midlands Police Fly-Fishing team successfully took part in the regional boat fishing qualifier at sunny Draycote Water, Warwickshire in May, to earn the right to fish the PSUK Nationals at Rutland next year.
The ‘A’ team consisting of Steve Owen (captain), Roy Taylor, Chris Howkins and Kevin Pearson, won convincingly by a substantial margin to put rivals well behind them, with the West Mids ‘B’ team coming through with a fine performance to clinch third place!
As always, staff at Draycote did us proud with excellent support, preparing a number of well-serviced boats for us to use, but unfortunately, due to a number of unavoidable absences, the field was a little bit depleted with only 24 competitors, representing West Mids, Staffs and West Mercia. Warwickshire were unable to enter a team this year so just the three forces battled it out, but take nothing away from the two WMP teams, the performance by all involved was superb with plenty of fish being caught, in particular by top rods Steve Owen and Roy Taylor.
The event was blessed with fine weather for a change after some exceptionally unseasonal conditions in previous years and this time the Draycote trout decided to turn up and play their part in a highly enjoyable day.
The winning weight and number of fish was higher than average, thanks to the determined effort of anglers who had practised the day before to get the edge over their competitors and the result was a fiercely competed contest between the teams.
The final results were as follows:
1) West Midlands A (55 fish for 117 lbs 7 ozs)
In time-honoured fashion, the social nature of the event continued after the weigh-in and announcements by organiser Steve Owen, by a visit to the pub for a quick ‘de-brief’.
Yes, another great day out with the West Mids Fly-Fishing section!
