Williams Impresses at Lillebaelt Half Marathon
PC Martin Williams once again added to his incredible running career by being selected for the Full Scotland Team at the Lillebaelt Half Marathon in Denmark. The race is one of the largest in Scandinavia with 11,000 entrants. Its an undulating course. There were several other factors to deal with this year, with temperatures in the mid 20's coupled with a 2pm start, and a strong wind whipping off the sea.
The race started fast with Tewolde Mengisteab an International African runner who is now eligible to represent Scotland. He pulled a group of 6 of well clear of the rest of the field within the first few miles. 5k passed in around 15min20secs, Martin was starting to struggle and lose touch. Mengisteab also paid for his early pace and ignoring the conditions. Martin pulled clear of him and was sitting in 5th place. The front 3 of Nielsen (Sweden), Faurschou (Denmark) and Andrew Douglas (Scotland) broke away. At around 9 miles Martin pulled clear of another Danish runner to get 4th. He held this position to the end to finish in 1hr11mins. Not a particularly fast time, but a good position to finish. Nielsen won in just under 68mins.
It was a great trip and Martin was well looked after. "It was a privilige to be called up to the full team in particularly as Scottish Athletics are the only nation within Britain to have athletes with Rio Olympic qualifiers so far and look to make up the majority of the endurance runner sin Rio".
