WMP Chess Season Summary 2017/18
Played 14 Won 3 Lost 11 (including two cup matches) pretty much tells the full story of our season.
We began the season in an unusual fashion gaining an undeserved promotion from Div 6 to 5. We combined both our four-man teams into a single six-man team which suited both the league and us.
We expected it to be tough and we weren’t disappointed. In the first half of the season there was just one highlight knocking St Georges (a Div 4 side) out of the cup. The cup run came to a swift end in the 2nd round. We managed only one league win out of 7 before Xmas leaving us 5 matches to salvage something from our season.
Most of the teams were just too strong for us but we also laboured against our equals (on paper) producing only one more win and consequential relegation back to Div 6.
The tussle between Fast Finish and Adjournments continues but most of the time by negotiation with our opponents we are usually allowed to play our preferred option.
Performances of Note:
Mark Cooper with 50% shows what a good player he is against some really tough opponents
No other player achieved 50% is an indication of the strength of our opposition
Unless we get a reprieve from the league then a return to Div 6 with only one four-man team beckons. However with one or two extra bodies we could run a second team. New players are always welcome so please get in touch if you’re tempted. New season starts in September.
