Cross country team strides ahead of the competition
On Wednesday 26 February 24 runners representing WMP travelled to Norfolk to compete in the PSUK championships. The team travelled to Thetford Forest to compete against 300 men and women representing forces across the country.
Considering the storms and rain the country has seen we have had the forest trails was remarkably fast and dry. But runners still had to content with cold and windy conditions as male competitors faced two laps of the course covering 6.2 miles, with women tackling one 3.8 mile lap.
The main race was won by our very own Martin Williams. He ran the course in an amazing time of 34 minutes and 7 seconds.
Along with Martin’s impressive time five other men crossed the line to help WMP claim the team prize. With the combined places of six runners counting towards the title, all finished within the first 48 places of the 208 finishers.
Congratulations to Tod Quiney (14th), Nigel Gaskin (20th), Andrew Smith (23rd), Nick Dale (24th) and David Wilson (48th).
And the success didn’t end there. Our men’s veteran team also took first place thanks to the efforts of Martin, Nigel and Andrew. Sarah Rose, Gillain Russon and and Sophie Clement also finished in a very credible fifth place out of 13 teams in the women’s competition.
Team manager Stu Parker was over the moon with the performances and very proud of the whole team. He’s also keen to hear from any runners who wish to join the team. They also compete in road races over distances from 10 miles to marathons.
If you’d like to find out more about the team please contact Stu Parker.
