I think that it’s fair to say that the last year or so has been quite a challenge for everyone and even trying to organise outdoor activities such as fishing have been difficult as fisheries have had to follow so many restrictions, but here in the WMP Fly-Fishing Section we have been undaunted by it and by taking a responsible and sensible approach to getting out members out on the water safely, we have managed to get the year up and running in style at one of our favourite venues – Draycote Water in Warwickshire.
Draycote is a convenient fishery for most of us and a place where we have good relations with the manager Ifor Jones and his staff, so as the country slowly emerged from lock down, it was the perfect place for us to organise days out knowing that we would be welcomed and allowed to fish in pairs, mix socially with appropriate social distancing and return to the sport we all love with peace of mind. Even more crucial was the knowledge that it was a water that would give us all good chance to hook into plenty of good fighting fish after such a long lay-off.
Three excellent days out were arranged, with large numbers of trout being caught on a range of fly-fishing methods on each occasion and really getting everyone back into the swing again… like we’d never been away!
We always enjoy the fishing at all of our events, but what we have also missed over the last year or so is the social side of the events, whether it is the breakfast beforehand or a pint and something to eat afterwards. That has been difficult recently but now, as thing shave opened up more, we are looking forward to resurrecting our social scene and hope that the forthcoming ‘Two Days Away’ at Rutland water in Leicestershire might be the start of our get-togethers with an overnight stay.
So, whether you are beginner or expert, if you are interested in coming along to see what we get up to, just contact our secretary Steve Owen on his mobile 07974 417855 to find out more. Everybody is welcome and we’re waiting to hear from you. In the meantime enjoy your fishing wherever you go and of course…
Tight lines!
