Four members of the WMP CrossFit Club attended the illustrious Inferno Pair CrossFit Competition at Cardiff University last weekend.
The event was held over two days in the fantastic indoor athletic arena at Cardiff University. Hundreds of people travelled from all over the UK to compete in one of the most well regarded and challenging tests of fitness in the CrossFit Calendar.
The first day kicked off with a test of strength and technique in the Clean and Jerk. Both Matt Thompson and Stewart Turner walked away with personal best lifts and solid placements in their respective categories. The next event was a combination of power and endurance where the athletes had to lift 60kg a total of 60 times between the pair in the fastest possible time. This is the equivalent of lifting a small adult female from the ground to above your head over and over again. Again all athletes acquitted themselves well with respectable mid table standings.
The next event was held outside in what felt like a Gale force wind blowing hard rain into the Athletes as they ran 4 laps of the Athletics track in pairs in the fastest time. This was a test of strategy and teamwork as well as cardiovascular fitness as each pair could choose who ran which lap as long as they ran two together. All athletes did well and Warren Little and Neil Loy walked away 2nd in the Masters (old people) category in that event.
The final event of the day played to the strengths of the less technical but super fit WMP athletes. 1000m row, 50 thrusters followed by as many Burpees over a Barbell as possible in 9 Minutes. Neil and Warren won the event and finished the day in 2nd place overall in the Masters with three points to make up on the second day. Both Stew and Matt worked hard and placed well to go into the second day with confidence.
The final day was a flurry of events favouring athletes with a ‘good engine’ or endurance. The 5th event combined an 80kg deadlift with 24” box jump overs for a total of 135 reps of each. This was followed by a 2km sprint on the Ski Erg – like a standing up rower. The final event combined 200m sprints, Dumbell cleans, Burpees, sprints with a dumbbell and then the same again in reverse order. It was a medley of pain and discomfort but was concluded by relief at the conclusion of the tests for the weekend. The support from the large crowd was intense throughout and was a credit to the Crossfit Community, with athletes staying around to cheer on others they had never met before in a great display of community spirit and comradery.
The day finished in glory for the WMP Crossfit section as Warren and Neil won every single event on Sunday to take first prize in emphatic style and win the Masters event overall. Stew and Matt also produced fantastic performances all day to finish well in the open age group categories amongst some of the top athletes in the Country.
WMP Crossfit welcome new members.
