The excellent facilities of the Solihull Arden Club were put to good use on Monday 2nd March for the PSUK Squash & Racketball Regional tournament for the 8th time in a row at that location. It was great to see some new faces but overall numbers were slightly down on previous years but the play was still just as tough with some brutal encounters in the early rounds. Competitors had travelled from West Mercia and Warwickshire to do battle with the resident WMP contingent. In the main Open draw the group stage was competitive, players needing to finish 1st or 2nd in order to proceed. After that there were further quarter and semi-finals to contend which meant that to win was going to be a titanic effort of fitness and skill. The final promised much, current Champion Rory Juss (WMP) would play debutant Luke Perrins (Warwickshire). They had previously met in the group stage with Juss squeezing a 2-1 victory. The final delivered a feast of great Squash which went first one way, then the next but the experience of Juss just held out to take the first set. Perrins dug deep but I think the general fatigue of his 6th match that morning was starting to take its toll and Juss ran out to a 2-0 victory.
In the Racketball former PSUK National Champion Matt Pugh (WMP) secured top spot in the Racketball league without dropping a set to retain the regional crown.
Sarah-Louise Kerrigan (Warwickshire) took the Ladies title.
The winners and runners-up of each event now qualify for the National finals in Norwich next month representing the West Midlands region.
