WMP played the 2nd game in our recent resurgence against Sikh Union Coventry. Once again, the first 20 minutes was finding the players in the car park and saying hello to faces old and new. Due to a late change of pitch times various SOS’s were sent out and a number of guest players answered the call to arms to bolster the police’s ranks.
Both teams started brightly with SU’s midfield pairing dominating the middle but WMP gaining momentum on the wings. Some back-and-forth movements of play saw both teams creating chances.
WMP’s guest keeper proved to be a solid barrier for some of the scrambled chances whilst the SU youth keeper was in inspired form making numerous saves from WMP s pressure particularly at short corners. However, Sikh Union having started stronger gained the lead from a PC after a good first save from WMP’s guest keeper.
The second quarter saw a slight change in WMP tactics which saw a foothold gained in the central areas. Evergreen Sam Straw was unlucky to have a goal disallowed as seemingly the whistle was blown before he connected with the ball however, he soon left no doubt feeding off a rebound to slot home and give WMP a deserved equaliser.
The second half saw WMP control the game with a resolute back 3 repelling SU’s attack and midfield slowly taking ownership of the field. WMP took the lead when Chris (Warwickshire Police) got a tip on a drag flick to divert the ball over the line.
Then Chris W (West Mid’s) produced a moment of sheer individual genius, collecting the ball at the edge of the D, spinning one handed to open up space before lashing the ball into the top corner to increase the lead to two.
WMP’s fitness and experience was telling and a fourth was forced home by one of our guests to seal the deal and continue the teams winning ways. An enjoyable and entertaining game was rewarded by rehydration at the bar afterward.
All players new and old are always welcome.
